Owings, D-backs offense get better of Rockies for first series sweep of season: By The Numbers

After getting battered by his former mates the last time out, Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Bronson Arroyo managed to get back on track at the least likely of venues.

Coming into Thursday night’s start against the Colorado Rockies, the 37-year-old sported a 1-3 record with a 7.62 ERA at Coors Field — the highest at any active National League park.

His evening didn’t get off to a rather smashing start, either, as Rockies center fielder Charlie Blackmon greeted him with a solo shot to begin the bottom half of the first inning.

However, over the next six-plus innings, the 15-year veteran allowed only three runs on five hits.

While the bullpen ultimately didn’t do him any favors, Arroyo’s offense provided more than enough support at the dish.

Paul Goldschmidt clubbed his team-leading 11th long ball, Martin Prado and Miguel Montero each continued their hot streaks with an RBI apiece, Chris Owings plated a career-high four runs and the D-backs swept their first series of the season with a convincing 12-7 victory in the finale.

Multi-hit performances were the norm for Arizona in the win. Six different players — David Peralta, Gerardo Parra, Goldschmidt, Montero, Owings and Prado — had at least two base knocks. Owings, Parra and Prado led the way with three each.

Not only was the sweep Arizona’s first of the season, it was also its first at Coors Field since April 4-6, 2008.

In franchise history, the D-backs have four road sweeps in Colorado.

In his first four big league appearances, Peralta has collected six total hits. By comparison, the man he started in place of Thursday, Cody Ross, has six hits in his last 13 appearances.

The D-backs once again delivered when ducks were on the pond against Rockies pitching. For the second straight night, Arizona hit .500 with runners in scoring position (8-of-16).

Of Owings’ 21 career RBI, 10 have come in six career games in the Mile High City.

Although he faced just one batter Thursday, left-handed reliever Oliver Perez more than earned his 11th consecutive scoreless outing. Perez was able to induce an inning-ending groundball off the bat of Justin Morneau with the bases loaded in bottom of the seventh.

With their 12-run outburst in the finale of the three-game set, the D-backs combined for a season-high 28 runs over their last two games.

The last time Arizona put together back-to-back double-digit performances was July 21-22, 2012 against the Houston Astros.

Of his 12 starts in 2014, Arroyo has given up four or more runs 41.6 percent of the time.

2012:

Arroyo’s only prior win in Denver came on July 27, 2012 as a member of the Cincinnati Reds. In that affair, the first-year D-back threw six scoreless frames.
