Arroyo, D-backs’ defense silence Astros: By The Numbers

The Arizona Diamondbacks hosted the Houston Astros for an early afternoon tilt Tuesday at Chase Field, and it was a relatively quiet affair as the game was not televised live locally, and the visiting team made very little noise on offense.

The Astros were held at bay thanks to the arm of D-backs starter Bronson Arroyo and the defense behind him. Though the 37-year-old right-hander gave up six hits in seven innings pitched, the Diamondbacks turned four double plays and Arroyo only allowed one earned run.

Both teams finished with seven hits on the afternooon, but the Diamondbacks were able to turn those into a few runs, winning by a final of 4-1, splitting the two-game series at Chase.

The two clubs will face each other again for two more contests in a row, but they’ll transition to Houston’s Minute Maid Park.

Here’s a look at Tuesday’s game by the numbers:

First baseman Paul Goldschmidt scored the game’s first run with a 403-foot shot to right field in the opening fram. Believe it or not, it was the 26-year-old slugger’s first career homer into the Chase pool. By the way, it was his 13th of the season, tying him for fourth-most in the National League. Goldy also added a double leading off the eighth inning and later stole third and then scored his second run of the contest. His 25 doubles are tops in the Majors.

Since a two-game losing streak — with a no-decision sandwiched in between — Arroyo has now picked up a win in each of his last two starts. He struck out five Tuesday on 98 total pitches, giving him 46 strikeouts on the season. The first-year Diamondback is now 6-4 in 2014 with a 4.22 ERA.

Goldschmidt has yet to strike out in this series. That’s a good sign for the D-backs’ leading hitter, as he went 18 contests in a row before Monday with at least one strikeout. He has struck out 66 times on the season in 259 at-bats.

Third baseman Martin Prado had only one hit in four at-bats, but it was a good one, as he recorded his fourth triple of the season — tied for third-most in the NL. The 30-year-old Venezuelan promptly scored the tie-breaking run in that seventh inning on a sacrifice fly.

Second baseman Aaron Hill drove in two runs in the contest with a sac fly in the seventh inning and a double in the eighth. He was the only batter in the game to drive in more than one run, and it was his ninth multi-RBI performance of the season. His 30 RBI in 2014 trail only Goldschmidt (48) and Miguel Montero (36) for most on the team.

On a first-inning ground ball, shortstop Chris Owings suffered his 10th error of the season. Only Washington’s Ian Desmond has more (13) errors at shortstop this season. At the plate Tuesday, Owings went 0-for-3 with one BB and one strikeout.

Although he went 1-for-4, outfielder David Peralta’s lone hit was his 13th in his first Major League season — in 36 at-bats. His batting average remains at an impressive .361 clip.

Closer Addison Reed pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning and struck out two in earning his 16th save of the year. His ERA also dropped just below 4.00 — 3.99 to be exact.

Both teams now have 29 wins in the campaign, with the Astros having just one loss less than the D-backs’ 38.

The early game didn’t induce a huge crowd, as only 17,667 fans were present to see the Diamondbacks’ sixth win in their last eight contests.
