Giants top D-backs as late rally falls short: By The Numbers

The Arizona Diamondbacks’ game against the San Francisco Giants on Saturday followed a familiar pattern.
Arizona found itself in a three-run hole before its first at-bat thanks to another poor Brandon McCarthy start. Pablo Sandoval and Hunter Pence continued to absolutely mash Arizona pitching, going a combined 5-for-9 with three RBIs and three runs.
And when all was said and done, the D-backs put themselves in a position to have a shot at a win before coming up just short in a 6-4 loss to the Giants at Chase Field.
The D-backs managed to get the tying run on second base in the ninth inning with Paul Goldschmidt at the plate and two out, but the slugger flew out to right on the first pitch he saw.

3 (part I)
All three D-backs pinch hitters in the game recorded hits — Jordan Pacheco, Cody Ross and Roger Kieschnick.

The Giants scored three first-inning runs off of McCarthy, who fell to 1-10 on the season. He allowed five runs on 10 hits in five innings.

Arizona hitters combined for five doubles, though the D-backs were unable to get timely hits with runners on and left 14 runners on base throughout the game.

The San Francisco win snapped a season-worst six-game losing streak for the Giants.

Eight different D-backs players recorded hits, including every starting position player but Paul Goldschmidt and Ender Inciarte.

Giants outfielder Hunter Pence launched his 11th homer of the year in the sixth inning — a towering blast that landed about halfway up the rows of tables at Friday’s Front Row.

Arizona rookie outfielder David Peralta laced a double off the center field wall, meaning he’s now reached base via a hit in 13 of the 19 games he’s played in his major league career.
15 (part I)
D-backs reliever Matt Stites — the organization’s top relief prospect — threw 15 pitches in his second MLB appearance, though it was an up-and-down one. Stites walked two Giants and allowed a leadoff double, but got out of the jam without allowing a run.
15 (part II)
Goldschmidt has now reached base in 15 straight games after going 0-for-2 with three walks on Saturday.
