Despaigne, Padres five-hit D-backs, take series finale: By The Numbers

In a mirror image of their series back in early May with the Arizona Diamondbacks, the San Diego Padres avoided being swept at Petco Park in the final game of the three-game set Sunday.

While Bud Black’s offense didn’t exactly show many signs of life Sunday against Arizona right-hander Mike Bolsinger (two earned runs allowed on three hits over six innings), it didn’t have to be all that stellar with the way Odrisamer Despaigne was dealing on the mound.

Making his second career start at the major league level, the Cuban right-hander fought through a tough first inning to twirl 6.2 innings of one-run baseball.

Arizona recorded one hit from the second through sixth innings, squandered a great opportunity in the the seventh and went quietly into the southern California afternoon over the final two frames, as San Diego took the divisional affair by a final of 2-1.

With the loss, the D-backs moved back into fifth place in the National League West.

Here’s a look back at the one-run defeat by the numbers:

1:

Highly-regarded shortstop Nick Ahmed made his MLB debut Sunday. Batting out of the eight-hole, Ahmed went 1-for-3 with a single to right field in the seventh.

3:

Since being called back up to the big league team, Bolsinger has tossed three straight quality starts. Bolsinger has allowed six earned runs in his last 20 innings of work.

4:

The D-backs have failed to score more than three runs in a game for four consecutive contests — their longest such streak since May 20 – May 25.

6:

Arizona’s six runs at Petco Park were its fewest in a series since it managed to plate just four in a three-game set against the St. Louis Cardinals (May 20 – 22).

7:

With two more free passes Sunday, D-backs first baseman Paul Goldschmidt set a career-high and matched a team-high for most walks in a series (7). Luis Gonzalez (2002) and Adam Dunn (2008) also reached seven times in a series via the walk.

9:

Ender Inciarte seems to have found a home in the leadoff spot. Inciare was the lone D-back to score a run Sunday, after Miguel Montero singled him home in the top half of the first.

In 23 at-bats as the team’s No. 1 hitter, Inciarte has nine hits, four runs scored and two RBI.

18-of-21:

While he pitched just a third of an inning in the seventh, left-handed reliever Joe Thatcher improved his impressive mark against the NL West this season. In 18 of his 21 divisional appearances, Thatcher hasn’t allowed a single run.

2006:

For the second straight road series, the D-backs were unable to finish off a sweep of San Diego. In fact, Arizona hasn’t pulled off the trick since April 24 – 26, 2006.
