Braves get to Collmenter early, take series opener over D-backs: By The Numbers

...

Of late, Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Josh Collmenter has been the team’s best starting pitcher.

In a nine-day span, Collmenter collected three wins, allowing just two earned runs in the process.

That side of Collmenter, however, was not on display early in Arizona’s affair with the Atlanta Braves Friday night at Turner Field.

Through the first two frames, the 28-year-old threw 44 pitches, yielding four runs on seven hits.

While he settled down after the rough start, the damage had already done.

Collmenter’s counterpart, righty Ervin Santana, threw yet another efficient outing against the D-backs. Santana went 7.1 strong innings, giving up just two earned runs, as the Braves celebrated the Fourth of July with a 5-2 win.

With the victory, Atlanta extended it’s lead in the National League East to 1.5 games.

Here’s a look back at the D-backs’ three-run loss by the numbers:

3:

Independence Day usually proves fruitful for the D-backs, but apparently not this year. Friday’s defeat dropped the team’s road record on July 4 to 8-3 — which previously included a three-game win streak coming in to Atlanta.

5:

Rookie outfielder David Peralta extended his hitting streak to a modest five games. He has at least two hits in four of those five games.

Since June 1, Peralta also leads all rookies with a .330 batting average.

7:

In 10 career games against his former team, Justin Upton has seven RBI. Friday’s lone run-scoring play came on a bases loaded walk.

8:

In spite of the fact he endured his fifth loss of the season, Collmenter pitched at least six innings for the eighth time since entering the rotation in mid-April.

8-of-13:

Arizona’s offense has been less than stellar over the last few weeks. In 13 games since June 18, the D-backs have scored exactly two runs or less eight different times.

10:

In the win, B.J. Upton collected his 10th two-hit game of the season. Oddly enough, the Braves leadoff hitter has yet to record more than two hits in a game in 2014.

11:

Collmenter set a career-high by allowing 11 hits. His previous high was 10 — which he achieved in a 6-0 loss to the Detroit Tigers back on June 25, 2011.

5/15/11:

Dating back to May 15, 2011, the D-backs have dropped 10 of their last 11 games at Turner Field.
