D-backs drop finale, series to Phillies: By The Numbers

If runs are at all indicative, Vidal Nuno’s new team has been slow to receive him.

In four starts with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Nuno has yet to win, though allowing a total of just 10 earned runs. The Diamondbacks have given him the same amount in return.

On Sunday, the left-hander took the loss, 4-2, to the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park, allowing three earned runs over 6.2 innings pitched.

After serving up a two-run home run to Ryan Howard in the first inning, though working quickly and effectively in innings 2-5, logging first-pitch strikes against 21 of the 28 batters he faced.

The Diamondbacks offered some support of their mound man in the second, when shortstop Nick Ahmed doubled in Gerardo Parra, and again in the sixth, when Paul Goldschmidt’s sacrifice fly to rightfield plated Ender Inciarte.

But that would be the scope of their scoring, as Phillies’ right-hander Roberto Hernandez exited the game after the seventh, having thrown just 75 pitches while allowing four hits and striking out one.

As a team, the Diamondbacks saw just 98 pitches in the game.

Though getting two men on base in the ninth inning, Martin Prado’s groundball to short killed the rally and ended the game.

Here’s a look back at the loss by the numbers:

2

The Diamondbacks have won only two of their last seven series — beating the Chicago Cubs and Miami Marlins.

2.5

The Diamondbacks have averaged just 2.5 runs of support in Vidal Nuno’s four starts in Sedona red to date, scoring none in the newcomer’s first outing for the team. Only Eric Stults has received less run support this season among major league pitchers, with the San Diego Padres averaging only 2.35 runs of support for their pitcher.

7

Diamondbacks leadoff hitter Ender Inciarte managed to see just seven pitches in four at-bats Sunday, though doubling in one at-bat.

17

Martin Prado’s game-ending double play was his 17th of the season — the second-most in the National League behind Marlins’ infielder Casey McGehee. Before joining the Diamondbacks, Prado never batted in to more than 19 double plays in a single season, but last season he hit in to 29 and he’s on pace to hit in to 26 by the end of his 2014 campaign.

19

Rookie David Peralta has recorded multiple hits in nearly half of his 40 big league starts to date, with 19 such games. On Sunday, Peralta was 2-for-4. He is hitting .321 this season.

68

Paul Goldschmidt collected his 68th RBI of the season Sunday, when he plated Ender Inciarte with a sacrifice fly. Only Giancarlo Stanton has more RBI among National League hitters this season.

98

The Diamondbacks saw just 98 pitches against the Phillies’ three pitchers Sunday. In 6.2 innings, Nuno threw 117 pitches.
