Report: Arizona Diamondbacks plan to retain Kirk Gibson

Aug 19, 2014, 3:42 PM | Updated: Aug 20, 2014, 4:20 am

Since the day Tony La Russa was named Chief of Baseball Operations for the Arizona Diamondbacks, two questions have been constantly brought up: what does his hiring mean for manager Kirk Gibson and general manager Kevin Towers?

The Diamondbacks — and La Russa — have been silent on the matter and that there was evaluation of the entire organization going on.

Gibson has always said he should be able to learn a great deal from someone as successful as La Russa was in the managerial position.

Towers made it known in the beginning he didn’t want to be a pseudo-GM but that La Russa and he discussed the moves they made and were working side by side just fine.

Tuesday, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported the current plan is to bring Gibson back but an announcement is unlikely anytime soon.

As of Tuesday night, the Diamondbacks are 53-73, more than 16 games behind the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers.
