Kershaw stymies D-backs as Dodgers sweep two-game set: By The Numbers

Aug 28, 2014, 5:08 AM | Updated: 5:46 am

The Arizona Diamondbacks don’t have to host the Los Angeles Dodgers again until next season. That’s the good news.

The bad: In 10 home games against the Dodgers this season, the D-backs went home victors just twice.

One of those two times was after an 18-7 rout, in which Clayton Kershaw was knocked out after just 1.2 innings, having allowed seven earned runs.

That was back on May 17. Kershaw has lost just two games since. And Wednesday night at Chase Field wasn’t one of those instances.

The left-hander carried his summer momentum into the desert, striking out 10 D-backs batters over 8.0 innings of work while allowing no earned runs.

Fellow left-hander Wade Miley, meanwhile, who opposed him Wednesday struggled once again for run support, though turning in a quality start.

The D-backs’ lone run was owed in part to a throwing error made by Dodgers left fielder Scott Van Slyke.

The Dodgers, meanwhile, benefited from a home run from Van Slyke while Matt Kemp drove in one and two-hole hitters Dee Gordon and Yasiel Puig with a double to the left-center field gap. All three runs came in the third inning.

Here’s a closer look at the loss, by the numbers:

1.8

Miley has averaged just 1.8 runs of support over his last four starts. He has gone 0-2 in those games.

2.45

Miley has pitched to a 2.45 ERA over his last four starts, amounting to 25.2 innings pitched.

10

Ender Inciarte recorded his 10th outfield assist of the season tonight, which ties him for the NL lead along with Puig and gives him the D-backs’ franchise record for a rookie.

12

Mark Trumbo has hit safely in 12 consecutive home games while reaching base in 15 straight.

16

Kershaw improved to 16-3 Wednesday, becoming the first pitcher in the majors to reach 16 wins this season. The left-hander, who is a shoe-in for the NL Cy Young and has a legitimate candidate to win MVP, has thrown 7.0 or more innings while allowing three or fewer runs in 14 straight starts. He has a 1.57 ERA in his last 11 starts, going 9-1 in those outings.
