At the 2014 Major League Baseball non-waiver deadline, the Arizona Diamondbacks were adamant about holding on to right-handed reliever Brad Ziegler despite teams’ best attempts to acquire services.
As it turns out, the D-backs kept the 34-year-old — although he has clearly not been himself of late.
This weekend, Arizona announced that Ziegler would undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee Tuesday in Phoenix — a procedure that will cause him to miss the remainder of the campaign.
In 2014, Ziegler compiled a 5-3 record with a 3.49 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP, but the veteran clearly seemed to labor on the mound over the last month-plus.
Since July 28, the submarine-throwing righty has allowed 10 earned runs in 13.1 innings of work,
Ziegler is set to make $5 million with the D-backs in 2015.
