St. Louis Cardinals end Arizona Diamondbacks’ season on a quiet note: By The Numbers

Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Josh Collmenter nearly threw a complete game Sunday, and he had a very strong outing overall, but he couldn’t quite keep up with the combined effort of the St. Louis Cardinals staff.

Collmenter allowed just three hits and one earned run over eight innings while striking out three and walking none, but Diamondbacks batters could not match the lone run he allowed.

Nick Greenwood was penciled in late to start the game for the Cardinals, and he went three innings and surrendered just one hit and no runs at Chase Field. Four different St. Louis pitchers would later take the mound, and Arizona could only muster one additional hit off of the group.

The Cardinals only collected three hits themselves, and their only run came on a sixth-inning fielder’s choice, but it was enough for a 1-0 victory in the season finale. A Pittsburgh loss earlier in the day gave St. Louis (90-72) the NL Central crown, so Sunday’s win was just icing on the cake.

Collmenter took the loss, falling to 11-9 on the year, and Arizona finished with a 64-98 record in 2014.

Interim manager Alan Trammell finished his short stint at the helm with a 1-2 record. He is on his way out the door along with the already departed Kirk Gibson.

Little-used second baseman Cliff Pennington was responsible for both of the Diamondbacks hits Sunday — two singles. He finished the season batting .254, and had five doubles, three triples, two home runs, 10 RBI and six stolen bases on the year.

Evan Marshall pitched a scoreless ninth inning, and he ended the year with the lowest ERA — 2.74 — on the staff, not counting the departed Joe Thatcher.

The Diamondbacks lost their last four series to close out the season. They also ended with 10 losses in their last 12 games.

It was the fourth game this year that Collmenter pitched 8.0 innings or longer. The 28-year-old threw 88 pitches on Sunday, 59 for strikes. He ended the year with a 3.46 ERA — the lowest of any D-back starter — and his 11 wins are a career high.

Ender Inciarte’s hitting streak of 15 games came to an end, as he went 0-for-4 Sunday. It was the second-longest streak of his career. The rookie finished the year with a .278 average.

Not only did Arizona finish with the worst record in the Majors, but its 64 wins are the second-lowest total in franchise history — behind the 51-111 campaign in 2004. It’s a mark that’s even worse than the team’s inaugural 1998 season, a 65-97 campaign.

As a team, the Diamondbacks slugged just 118 homers in 2014, the third-lowest total in the National League. Their .249 batting average as a team was also the fifth-worst mark in the NL.

Rookie David Peralta went 0-for-4, but finished the season with the highest batting average — .286 — for any Diamondback with more than 300 at-bats and not named Paul Goldschmidt, who hit .300 in 406 at-bats. A.J. Pollock’s average was .302 after going 0-for-3 Sunday, but he recorded just 265 at-bats.
