Coyotes clinch third consecutive playoff berth

Apr 6, 2012, 1:18 AM | Updated: 2:32 am

The Phoenix Coyotes may have been idle on Thursday night, but they still locked up their third playoff berth in as many seasons.

When the Nashville Predators beat the Dallas Stars 2-0, the Texas side was eliminated from playoff contention and guaranteed the Coyotes a spot in the playoffs.

The Coyotes still have two games left — Friday against St. Louis and Saturday against Minnesota in the regular season finale.

The Coyotes final spot in the standings has not yet been decided, as they are currently tied with the Los Angeles Kings for the Pacific Division lead and the third seed in the playoffs. The San Jose Sharks trail both teams by just one point.

Going in to Friday, the Coyotes will have a game in hand against the Kings and Sharks, who close out the season with a home-and-home series.
