Coyotes forward MacLean suffers cardiac emergency

Jul 4, 2012, 10:41 PM

Phoenix Coyotes forward Brett MacLean, 23, suffered a cardiac emergency Monday night and is currently in an intensive care unit, according to a press release from the team.

The statement read as follows:

“Brett was playing hockey last night in Owen Sound, Ontario when he suffered a medical emergency,” said Maloney. “Brett received CPR on site and was taken to a local hospital by ambulance where he was treated. He was then transported via an air ambulance to Knight University Hospital in London, Ontario where he was admitted to the cardiac ICU. Our thoughts and prayers are with Brett and his family. We request that everyone please respect their privacy at this time. We will provide an update on Brett’s status when information is available.”

Later reports came out that MacLean was in stable condition, but he remains in the ICU. More about his condition and what caused the emergency are expected within the next 24 to 48 hours.

MacLean was reportedly awake and coherent approximately 36 hours after collapsing.

It is still unknown what caused the young forward to collapse.

MacLean, who spent the 2010-2011 season with the Coyotes, was claimed on waivers by the Winnipeg Jets at the beginning of last season. He made five NHL appearances last season, posting two assists.

MacLean was reclaimed by the Coyotes on waivers at a later date.
