The Arizona Cardinals added a veteran to their backfield, agreeing to terms on a one-year deal with Chris Johnson.

Jay Glazer broke the news on Twitter and it was later confirmed by a press release from the Cardinals.

Back in March, Johnson was shot in the shoulder in Orlando, Fla., after an unknown car opened fire at a red light and killed one man.

Johnson rushed for at least 1,000 yards in all six of his seasons with the Tennessee Titans. His signature season was his second in the NFL, when he ran for 2,006 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2009. He signed a two-year contract with the New York Jets in 2014 and had 663 yards and one touchdown in his only season with the team.

Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians brought up the possibility of adding another running back early last week.

Lead back Andre Ellington battled injuries last season as well as early in this year’s training camp. Third-round pick David Johnson has struggled with a hamstring injury in most of training camp, leaving the team with Kerwynn Williams, Stepfan Taylor, Robert Hughes, Paul Lasike and Marion Grice, who is also currently sidelined.

The former East Carolina star Chris Johnson will look to help one of the Cardinals’ biggest weaknesses. Arizona averaged only 3.29 yards per carry last season, the lowest number in the NFL.

The Cardinals waived injured safety Brandon Person, who tore his ACL Saturday, to make room on the roster.
