Newell Brown joins Phoenix Coyotes coaching staff

Jul 10, 2013, 6:28 PM | Updated: 6:46 pm

On Wednesday, Phoenix Coyotes general manager Don Maloney announced that Newell Brown would be joining the team’s coaching staff, serving as assistant coach.

John Anderson, the team’s assistant coach for the previous two seasons, would not returning for the 2013-14 season, Maloney said.

“Newell has a wealth of experience and brings a very positive, upbeat attitude to our hockey club,” Maloney said. “His primary focus will be our power play and creating more offensive opportunities in our games. With Assistant Coach John Anderson not returning, we have found an excellent replacement.”

Brown served as assistant coach of the Vancouver Canucks for the previous three NHL seasons, helping the team to reach the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals.

Prior to that, Brown, 51, was assistant coach of the Anaheim Ducks, while also holding associate coach and assistant coach roles with the Columbus Blue Jackets and Chicago Blackhawks, dating back to the 1996-97 season.

An Ontario native, Brown was also head coach of Team Canada in the 1988 Spengler Cup, in which the team won a silver medal.

Before coaching in the NHL, the coach also spent four seasons as head coach of the Adirondack Red Wings, Detroit’s AHL affiliate, and head coach of Michigan Tech University from 1990-92.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, per Coyotes’ policy.
