2014 NHL Draft: Arizona Coyotes’ picks round-by-round

The Arizona Coyotes had a busy two days at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, selecting nine players in the 2014 NHL Draft, including seven forwards.

Here’s a breakdown of the organization’s newest prospects — some of whom have rich hockey bloodlines.

Brendan Perlini (1st Round, No. 12 overall):

The 6-foot-3 left winger has starred for the Niagara IceDogs (OHL) the last two seasons. In 2013-14, he tallied 71 total points, including 34 goals. He’s the third member of his family to be drafted by an NHL team.

Ryan MacInnis (2nd Round, No. 42 overall):

The last name may sound familiar, as the second-round selection is the son of former Norris Trophy winner and 13-time All-Star Al MacInnis. But unlike his father, the 18-year-old plays center. Last season, he scored 16 goals to go along with 21 assists for the Kitchener Rangers (OHL).

Christian Dvorak (2nd Round, No 58 overall):

Staying with the offensive theme, the Coyotes selected the American left winger with their second of two second-round picks. In 2013-14, the 18-year-old played in 33 games with the London Knights (OHL), the same squad 2013 first-round pick Max Domi used to skate with. Dvorak had six goals and eight assists that season.

Anton Karlsson (3rd Round, No. 87 overall):

Looking for scorers, Don Maloney again focused on the offensive side of the ice in the third round. After trading the No. 73 pick to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for the No. 87 and No. 117 selections, the Coyotes nabbed the Swedish forward. The 17-year-old plays both wing positions and has starred for Sweden’s U18 and U20 teams. The 6-foot-2 Swede also tallied 20 points for Frölunda J20 (SuperElit) in 2013-14. His brother Erik was a first-round pick by the Ottawa Senators in 2008.

Michael Bunting (4th Round, No. 117 overall):

The first Canadian taken off the board by the Coyotes, the 6-foot-1 Bunting played 48 games for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (0HL) in 2013-14. In those 48 games, the 18-year-old had 15 goals and 27 assists.

Dysin Mayo (5th Round, No. 133 overall):

The first defenseman taken by Arizona in the draft, Mayo made a name for himself as a two-way player for the Edmonton Oil Kings (WHL). In 2013-14, Mayo had seven goals and 23 assists, not to mention a plus-minus of 17.

David Westlund (6th Round, No. 163 overall):

A stay-at-home defenseman by trade, the 6-foot-3 Swede played 21 games with Brynäs (SHL) a season ago. He also made four appearances with Sweden’s U19 team, tallying just one point.

Jared Fiegl (7th Round, No. 191 overall):

A versatile forward, the Colorado native was expected to play his hockey at Cornell next season. Fiegl has been a part of USA Hockey since he was 16, and in 2013-14 recorded six points with the national team’s U18 squad.

Edgars Kulda (7th Round, No. 193 overall):

A goal scorer through and through, the left winger of Latvian descent was a teammate of Mayo’s last season in Edmonton. In 66 WHL games, Kulda accounted for 60 total points — 30 goals and 30 assists.
