Arizona Coyotes end homestand with loss to Calgary Flames: By the Numbers

Well, it was a good game for two periods.

The Arizona Coyotes and Calgary Flames went into the third period Thursday tied at one, but the visiting team piled on its struggling host to make for a lopsided result.

Flames right wing David Jones scored just under five minutes into the final period to break the tie, and Calgary would add a goal roughly 11 minutes later and then an empty netter not even three minutes after that.

The result was a 4-1 Calgary win, the Coyotes’ third loss in a row, all at Gila River Arena. Arizona fell to 16-23-4 with the loss, while the Flames improved to 23-18-3, the ninth-best record in the Western Conference.

Here’s a look at Thursday’s contest, by the numbers:

After going 3-2 against the Flames in 2013-14, Arizona has lost all four of its meetings with Calgary this season — not counting a preseason loss. The Flames have put up 17 goals in those four games, while Arizona has only managed six. The Coyotes face Bob Hartley’s group one more time in 2014-15: Tuesday, April 7, at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary.

Arizona finished its six-game homestand with a 2-4 record, losing its last three contests after winning two of the first three.

Mikkel Boedker went top shelf in the second period for the Coyotes’ lone goal of the night. He has scored in four consecutive games, a career high, and has netted five goals in total during this recent stretch.

It was a relatively friendly game, as the two teams combined for only four penalty in minutes; Coyotes center Martin Hanzal was responsible for all of them. When it came to hits, the Flames dominated the category by a 43-33 margin.

Many of the Coyotes’ shots on goals came from unusual suspects: Right wing David Moss tied a game high with five shots on goal, while center Sam Gagner took four.

Elsewhere in the league, recent Coyotes castoff Devan Dubnyk put up an 18-save shutout in the Minnesota Wild’s 7-0 win over the Buffalo Sabres.

Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith was solid through two periods, but he couldn’t keep up with all the shots against him in the final frame. Smith saved 21 shots on the night, but surrendered three of the Flames’ four goals — a save percentage of .875. The 32-year-old netminder’s record fell to 7-18-2 on the season with Thursday’s loss. Calgary goalie Joni Ortio, meanwhile, made 27 saves in 28 shots against him Thursday night.

Defenseman Keith Yandle picked up his first point in five games by assisting Boedker’s second-period goal. The 28-year-old Yandle is third on the team with 27 points this season.

The Coyotes had a big advantage in shots on goal for most of the evening, but they ended up barely winning the category: 28-25. That’s because the Flames out-shot the home team 13-7 in the final period, which led to three goals for the visitors.
