Sam Gagner’s first goal in six games for the Coyotes came early in the first period against the Blues, in the middle of a shooting drought Arizona couldn’t seem to shake all game.

The lack of shots-on-goal ultimately caused their demise, as they fell 2-1 to St. Louis on the road Tuesday night.

The Blues’ Alexander Steen tied things up at 15:10 in the first, and Dmitrij Jaskin had the go-ahead shot halfway through the second period.

Of course, it couldn’t be a scoring drought without a struggle by Arizona to even get shots on Blues goaltender Jake Allen.

The ‘Yotes were out-shot 30-13 through the first two periods.

Arizona then pulled goaltender Mike Smith with 2:03 left in the third period and out-shot the Blues for the first time all game, but to no avail.

What did the loss look like, by the numbers?

Gagner’s goal was his 10th of the season for Arizona.

Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith continued his post-All-Star success with 34 saves out of 36 shots and has posted a save percentage of at least .920 in seven of his last eight games.

Arizona was outshot all night, the worst of which was the second period. The ‘Yotes took their first shot of the period with six minutes to go and were already down 10 shots to zero.

They were also outshot 16-9 in the first period and 14-4 in the second, but managed to up their intensity a bit in the third period, outshooting the Blues 13-6.

19

The Coyotes have lost 19 games this season when getting outshot by an opponent for a record of 12-19-4.

8

The Blues are 8-0-1 in their last nine against the Coyotes.

Despite the loss, the Coyotes are on pace to break their 3-win month of January. They’re 3-2-1 thus far in February (20-27-7 overall).
