Report: Darnell Dockett released by 49ers

Sep 4, 2015, 8:12 AM

The Arizona Cardinals cut Darnell Dockett in March, ending his decade-long tenure in the Valley.

The veteran defensive lineman ran to San Francisco, signing a two-year deal with the 49ers, a division rival of the Cardinals.

But it doesn’t look like Dockett will suit up for the 49ers. Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area is reporting San Francisco has cut Dockett as the team pares its roster down to the league limit of 53 players.

The former Arizona Cardinals defensive end was a surprise release, as the 49ers worked to get their roster down to the NFL maximum of 53 players before the deadline at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The 49ers informed Dockett on Friday he was released, a source confirmed.

Dockett missed all of the 2014 season with Arizona after suffering a torn ACL in training camp. He was battling a rib contusion in camp with San Francisco, although Dockett claimed on his social media accounts that he had a broken rib.

The three-time Pro Bowler has 40.5 sacks in his career — all with the Cardinals. He had three sacks in Arizona’s 27-23 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII.
