Arizona Diamondbacks 2015 season in review: By the Numbers

The Arizona Diamondbacks ended the season on a positive note with a 5-3 win over the Houston Astros on Sunday, but that’s all the October baseball that Arizona will see this year.
With the 2015 season came some highs and lows for the Diamondbacks.
On the plus side, there was Paul Goldschmidt doing Paul Goldschmidt things.
“Goldy” finished the season with some of the best stats in baseball. His average (.321) was the fourth-highest in the majors, his RBI (110) was good for sixth-best, he drew the third-most walks (118) and he finished the year with the second-best on-base plus slugging (1.005).
Another positive was that things went well for the Diamondbacks down on the farm, with Arizona’s minor league system earning two league championships and the second-best win percentage of all organizations.
But as with any team that fails to make the postseason, there were also some downfalls.
For the D-backs, the majority of those downfalls were pitching-related. Arizona finished the season with a team ERA of 4.04. The Diamondbacks pitching staff also gave up the fourth-most home runs of any team in baseball (182).
Considering that the Diamondbacks finished 2014 with the worst record in baseball, this year was significantly better.
Below we take a look at the season in review, by the numbers.

The number of hits the Diamondbacks totaled in 2015. Arizona led the National League in total hits and finished fourth amongst all MLB teams. The D-backs also had the seventh-best cumulative batting average in baseball in 2015, as they posted a team average of .264 on the year.

The fielding percentage that Arizona ended the season with, the sixth-best in baseball. The Diamondbacks finished the year with the second-most putouts (4400) and fourth-most assists (1697) of any team while committing just 86 errors, the seventh-lowest of any team.

The total number of runs scored by the Diamondbacks throughout the season. Although they scored the second most runs in the NL, the D-backs just barely finished the season with a positive run differential (+7) after allowing a total of 713 runs on the year.

The number of extra base hits that Arizona finished the season with, the fifth-most of major league teams. The Diamondbacks finished the season with the third-most triples (48) of any team, with six players finishing the season with five or more. David Peralta led that group with 10 triples, the fifth-most of any major league player.

The number of stolen bases the Diamondbacks accumulated in 2015, good for second among all teams in Major League Baseball. A.J. Pollock led the way for the D-backs on the base paths with 39, the fourth-most stolen bases in baseball.

The number of wins the Diamondbacks ended the year with, 15 more wins than their final total during the 2014 season. At 79-83, Arizona finished 2015 two games below .500.

The save streak that Diamondbacks closer Brad Ziegler ended the season with, the longest such streak in the majors. Ziegler finished 2015 with 30 saves in 32 opportunities and an ERA of just 1.85.

The number of games that the Diamondbacks finished the season behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. Lucky number 13 also marks the draft position that the Diamondbacks are slotted to have in 2016 based on reverse order of this year’s regular-season standings.
