D-backs general manager Dave Stewart confirmed the Padres’ request earlier Monday when speaking to reporters.
Green just wrapped up his first season on the D-backs coaching staff, where he served as third base coach. It was his 12th year in the organization, as he posted a 219-189 record in four seasons as a manager. Green led Double-A Mobile in 2013-14, Advanced Rookie Missoula in 2012 and the Rookie League D-backs in 2011.
Prior to getting into coaching, he appeared in 140 games over four big league seasons, two of which came in Arizona.
The Padres are needing to replace Pat Murphy, who was let go after finishing the season as the team’s interim manager. San Diego, which posted a 74-88 record this year, fired skipper Bud Black on June 15 when the team was 32-33.
