Former Cardinals QB John Skelton ponders why he’s not in the NFL

Oct 9, 2015, 7:32 AM | Updated: 4:58 pm

It’s a well-known fact that there is a shortage of competent quarterbacking in the National Football League.

That is very evident in Houston, where head coach Bill O’Brien has shuffled between Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett in a season that has seen the Texans start 1-4.

Things were looking up a little bit Thursday night for Houston. After Mallett was injured in the first half, Hoyer entered the game and rallied the Texans, throwing for 312 yards and two touchdowns. Trailing 27-20 with two minutes left and facing a 3rd-and-2 at the Indianapolis Colts’ 38-yard line, all that quarterback optimism just vanished.

Under pressure, Hoyer just lobbed the ball deep down the middle of the field and it was picked off by Mike Adams, killing the Texans’ chance for a victory. Seriously, it was ugly, as you can see in this GIF produced by SB Nation.

That throw sparked a lot of reaction on the internet, including a tweet from former Cardinals quarterback John Skelton.

Pretty funny for everyone who’s not a Texans fan.

Skelton was in the NFL for four seasons, including three with the Cardinals. From 2010 to 2012, the former Fordham signal caller went 8-9 as a starter while throwing 15 touchdown passes and 25 interceptions.

It is interesting to note that Skelton and Hoyer were teammates in 2012 with the Cardinals. Skelton won the starting job out of training camp, but was injured in the season opener against Seattle and was replaced by Kevin Kolb. Hoyer was the fourth different starting quarterback that season as he got the nod in the season finale against the San Francisco 49ers.
