Cardinals have important decisions after lockout lifted

PHOENIX – The Arizona Cardinals, like many other NFL teams around the league, will be pressed to quickly fill holes on their roster when the lockout is lifted.

The lockout could be over in mid-July leaving teams with only two weeks of free agency and trades.

For the Cardinals, it’s obvious finding a new starting quarterback is the team’s number one priority.

“The quarterback stuff is the first domino to fall because if you don’t address the quarterback situation properly, I don’t think you get Larry Fitzgerald to re-sign here,” said Chris Hamblin on the Sports 620 KTAR’s Sports Interactive show on Tuesday.

“If his deal’s up, I think he’s going to look around and there’s going to be people who are going to be willing to pay a premium and have a better situation and system.”

While finding a new QB is vital for the Cardinals, the team has other important holes to fill.

“Right now you got to put the fluid situation at offensive line as your number two priority behind quarterback. You got to concentrate on the offensive line at this stage,” said Paul Calvisi.

Starting left guard Alan Faneca retired in the offseason while holdover starters center Lyle Sendlein and right guard Deuce Lutui are not under contract.

Wide receiver Steve Breaston is also without a contract and Fitzgerald will need somebody to keep team’s from focusing so much on him.

“Re-signing Steve Breaston makes Larry Fitzgerald’s life easier. That’s something that needs to be bumped up the list,” said Hamblin.

No doubt the Cardinals have important holes to fill, but we’re all still waiting for the lockout to be over to start addressing these problems.
