When people start reminiscing about the greatest upsets in
United States Olympic history, they’ll immediately start
talking about the Miracle on Ice from the 1980 Winter
games or Billy Mills’ improbable run to the gold medal in
the 10,000 meter run at the 1964 Summer Olympics.
Heck, both of those events led to big Hollywood movies
being made about them.
Not many people will talk about the women’s 200 meter
butterfly final when the Valley’s own Misty Hyman shocked
Australia’s Susie O’Neill and the world by winning the
gold in relatively easy fashion at the 2000 Summer
Olympics in Sydney.
They should.
