Kole Calhoun becomes 100th ASU player in MLB

May 21, 2012, 4:36 PM | Updated: 5:45 pm

Scan the Monday baseball transaction wire, and you
might have just missed the following entry:

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim: Recalled
outfielder Kole
Calhoun from Salt Lake of the Pacific Coast League.

But there is significance to it all. Calhoun is a former
Buckeye High School standout who also went on to have a
very productive college career at Arizona State before
being picked by the Angels in the 8th round of the 2010
First Year Player Draft.

But even more significantly, Calhoun becomes the 100th
former Sun Devil to reach the big leagues. ASU is just
the second baseball program to reach the century mark in
players who have reached “The Show.” The University of
Texas also has 100 alums who have graced MLB rosters.

In two years with the Sun Devils, Calhoun jacked 29 home
runs, drove in 112 runs and batted a respectable .317.
The 24-year-old was batting .296 with 5 homers in Salt
Lake this season.

Last July, Jason Kipnis got the call from the Cleveland
Indians to become the 99th big leaguer who played his
college ball in Tempe.
