It didn’t take long for the Western Athletic Conference to fill a void.
After reports Monday suggested that the University of Denver was leaving the WAC and moving to the Summit League, Jason Groves of the Las Cruces Sun-News says the conference has already found the school’s replacement.
According to Groves, Grand Canyon University is that replacement.
“There will be an upcoming press conference announcing that Grand Canyon is basically replacing Denver as a conference member effective next year,” New Mexico State athletics director McKinley Boston told Groves.
The move would be a big one for GCU, as the school would be making the leap from Division II athletics to Division I.
The WAC just completed its final season of Division I college football, but GCU along with New Mexico State, Idaho (leaving in 2013), California-Bakersfield, Utah Valley and Seattle will compete for next season’s NCAA men’s basketball tournament automatic bid.
While the NCAA requires each conference to have seven teams in order to qualify for an automatic bid, interim commissioner Jeff Hurd has said the conference can maintain its status with six schools for a two-year waiver period.
