You really want to hear about what goes on in your child’s life while they’re away for several hours; but somehow he’s able to sum up his whole day in one single word: “Fine.” You need a new game plan. If you change up your tactics and start asking new questions, you are more likely to get some new responses. Here are 20 questions you can ask your kids that will get them chatting about how school actually was today.

1. What made you smile today?

2. What was the best thing that happened at school today?

3. What was the worst thing that happened at school today?

4. If you taught the class today, what would you have done differently?

5. If you taught the class today, what subject would you teach?

6. What did you do during recess?

7. What’s something you really want to learn?

8. What was the funniest thing your teacher said today?

9. What was the kindest thing you did for someone today?

10. What was the kindest thing someone did for you today?

11. Who did you eat lunch with today?

12. What’s something interesting you learned today?

13. What challenged you today?

14. Which kids in your class do you want to become friends with?

15. How do you feel about your science test?

16. If you could go back in time, what would you change about today?

17. Which of your classmates are you most like?

18. What are you most excited to do at school tomorrow?

19. What was the best food someone had in their lunch today?

20. Which one of the other kids would you elect to be the teacher?
