According to various reports, Arizona State has hired former Texas play caller Jay Norvell to join Todd Graham’s staff in Tempe.

Norvell is expected to serve as the passing game coordinator and receivers coach under new offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey.

Before ASU hired Lindsey, there were reports that Norvell interviewed for that post which became available when Mike Norvell left to become the head coach at Memphis.

According to Scout.com, Norvell will take over for receivers couch DelVaughn Alexander, who has been on Graham’s staff since he became ASU’s coach in 2012. It is not known if Alexander will remain on staff.

Jay Norvell spent just one year at Texas, and handled play-calling duties after Longhorns head coach Charlie Strong demoted co-offensive coordinators Shawn Watson and Joe Wickline. Prior to his stint in Austin, Norvell served as a co-offensive coordinator and receivers coach at Oklahoma from 2008 to 2014. The 52-year-old also has made stops at UCLA (2007), Nebraska (2004-06), Iowa State (1995-97), Wisconsin (1989-94) and Northern Iowa (1988).

He also has six years of NFL coaching experience, serving as wide receivers coach for the Indianapolis Colts from 1998 until 2001 and tight ends coach with the Oakland Raiders from 2002 to 2003.

Texas went 5-7 in 2015, averaging 370.8 yards and 26.4 points per game.

Norvell is the fifth Texas assistant to leave this offseason.
