The good folks over at the For the Win! Blog at USAToday.com put together a bracket to find the best uniforms in sports.
They put together a 32-team “tournament” that readers could vote on to name a sartorial champion. The pairings included some teams that feature traditional looks, like the New York Yankees, Boston Celtics, Oakland Raiders and Michigan Wolverines football.
It also included the Oregon Ducks football program, a team on the cutting edge of sports fashion in both technology and options.
The one entrant from the world of pro soccer was Sporting Kansas City of the MLS. Turns out, they won.
Sporting KC beat Notre Dame football, the Chicago Cubs, Detroit Red Wings, Michigan Football, Oregon Football and the Boston Bruins on the way to the title. They received greater than 65 percent of the vote in every single match.
Any casual sports fan could name some distinguishing feature of the uniforms of all 31 other entrants. We cover sports for a living and had no idea about any aspect of Sporting Kansas City’s uniforms. Did we mention they have a giant ad across the front of the jersey?
This is clearly a case of fans of the soccer franchise stuffing the ballot box to gain a little national notoriety. Welcome to the perils of internet voting — the same system that allowed Cleveland fans to determine that Johnny Manziel was a better Brown than Jim Brown himself.
