DRC for Kolb? Three reasons it won’t happen

Jul 20, 2011, 8:38 PM | Updated: 10:00 pm

The biggest rumor surrounding the pursuit of Kevin Kolb is that the Cardinals are prepared to part with Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie in order to get him.

Sports 620 KTAR’s Sports Interactive, though, does not think that is a good idea. So, they gave three reasons why it doesn’t seem likely to happen.

“Argument number one,” Dave Burns said, “We point back to what ESPN insider Adam Schefter said yesterday on Colin Cowherd’s show, that he’s hearing it’s draft picks for Kevin Kolb.”

That’s not surprising. The NFL hardly sees player-for-player trades, meaning the Eagles could be seeking draft picks in exchange for their backup quarterback.

If that’s the case, Paul Calvisi said the Cardinals should pull the trigger.

“Even it if is a first and a third, I would personally rather give that up, the prospect of a good player, than giving up a good player in Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.”

But that that’s not the only reason the trade is not going to happen.

The guys on the show pointed to Cardinals captain Adrian Wilson, who tweeted about how the rumors need to stop.

“I could easily how it could be read as ‘that’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard, we would not possibly want to give up DRC for Kevin Kolb,'” Burns said. “Almost as if a ‘does he know something we don’t’ kind of a tweet.”

While the Cardinals aren’t likely to let players decide on what moves they’ll make, if anyone was going to be consulted it would be Wilson.

Besides, Wilson works with DRC on the field, and if the talented-but-inconsistent corner was a problem you probably wouldn’t be seeing A-Dub come to his defense.

Reason three, Calvisi said, was something new defensive coordinator Ray Horton said on 3 TV Tuesday night, about how the Cardinals defense will be one of the NFL’s best.

“Would you have that level of confidence if you didn’t know that you had DRC at your disposal,” Calvisi asked. “Without Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, if the former Pro Bowl corner was going to Philadelphia, I’m not sure you’d be that confident.”

True, though there is a prevailing thought out there that DRC doesn’t really fit into Horton’s defense anyway.

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie for Kevin Kolb. It could happen, but it may not.

We’ll find out soon enough.
