MLB player’s wife raises money for pediatric cancer research while running Boston Marathon

Apr 20, 2016, 12:47 PM

You may not know who Cindy Ellis is, but during the Boston Marathon this week the wife of Los Angeles Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis not only finished the 26.2-mile race in 3:39:42, but raised more than $54,000 for pediatric cancer research in the process.

She did so to honor a family friend who is battling pediatric cancer.

As noted by Yahoo! Sports, the Ellises promised to match donations up to $26,200. A.J. was active on social media in trying to help raise funds, and even took a red eye flight across the country to watch Cindy run.

The race may be over, but that does not mean Ellis is done trying to raise money for the cause.

Elsewhere in the sports world, Mississippi football coach Dan Mullen also ran the race. According to the Clarion-Ledger, he did so in part to inspire his team, who he teaches to be mentally tough and not shy away from any challenge. He also raised more than $40,000 for the Mullen 36 Family Foundation, which helps Mississippi children with scholarships, arts, athletics and healthcare.
