Martz won’t address ASU rumors

Dec 1, 2011, 1:06 AM | Updated: 4:24 am

With the rumors that surfaced earlier this week about
Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz having
interest in the vacant Arizona State coaching job, what
better place to go than to the source for information?

With the Bears preparing for a game against the Kansas
City Chiefs on Sunday, the Windy City media took the time
to ask Martz about the rumors of him being linked to ASU
and UCLA. Let’s just say Martz kept it close to the vest.

“Anything about those kinds of things, I would never
discuss,” Martz said. “I have a job, and this job is the
only one I’ll discuss.”

While there has been rumors of Martz’s interest in Arizona
State, there has been no indication that VP of
Athletics Lisa Love is reciprocating the interest.

Martz is familiar with the Arizona State program. His
last stop as a college coach was in Tempe, where he was on
the offensive staff from 1983 to 1991 under Darryl Rogers,
John Cooper and Larry Marmie. Martz was the offensive
coordinator for the four years of Marmie’s reign as head
coach.

Since 1992, Martz has coached in the NFL, including a six-
year stint as the head coach of the St. Louis Rams. Martz
guided the Rams to an NFC championship in 2001 before they
lost to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVI.
