Coach that had ‘interest’ in ASU job retires

Jan 16, 2012, 11:23 PM | Updated: 11:34 pm

The Arizona State Sun Devils’ search for a new head coach took many twists and turns this offseason but one particular rumor had people buzzing.

Back in November, Doug Haller of the Arizona Republic heard rumblings that Mike Martz, a former assistant for the Sun Devils from 1983-1991, had interest in the ASU head coaching job.

A lot has changed since then.

The Sun Devils went on to hire former Pittsburgh coach Todd Graham, and today, Martz announced his plans to retire.

NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora reported the 61-year-old’s decision to walk away from the game. Most recently, Martz served as the offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears.
His contract expired this offseason and the team and Martz mutually decided to part ways after two seasons.

And then, there was that pesky Arizona State rumor.
Martz showed a genuine interest in coaching college football this season but the options he exhausted didn’t pan out.

The former St. Louis Rams’ head coach infamously created the “Greatest Show on Turf” offense and led the Rams to the 2001 Super Bowl.
