Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright nearly Randy Johnson’d a bird

Jun 27, 2016, 10:49 PM

Following Randy Johnson’s fateful deadly pitch, you’d have thought birds would have learned by now.

Nope.

Birds are still streaking through ballparks in the middle of baseball games, and one unobservant creature fluttered straight in the path of an Adam Wainwright pitch during the Cardinals’ loss to the Royals on Monday.

Luckily, Wainwright’s changeup gave the feathered fellow just enough time to escape without injury, but the more eye-popping visual here is that the bird also somehow flew in a straight path over home plate without being hit by the ball or Cheslor Cuthbert’s sweeping baseball bat that fouled the pitch off.

Either this is fantastic timing by the bird or it’s actually further in front of home plate than it initially appears.

Not including delicious ballpark chicken fingers, it remains clear that birds and baseball don’t mix.

On second thought, those don’t mix well, either.
