Is Kevin Kolb comparable to Aaron Rodgers?

Jul 28, 2011, 7:08 PM | Updated: 8:25 pm

Kevin Kolb does not have a Super Bowl ring. He is not replacing a legend in Brett Favre. He does not have a signature touchdown celebration and he is not Aaron Rodgers.

What Kevin Kolb does have is seven career starts, the same number Rodgers had prior to signing his six year, $65 million contract with $20 million guaranteed.

Eerily similar to Rodgers’ contract, reports say Kolb has agreed to a five year $63 million contract with $21 million guaranteed.

Although they had the same number of starts, the comparisons between Rodgers and Kolb are a bit premature.

In his first seven starts, Kolb has thrown 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions while Rodgers threw 12 touchdowns and four interceptions.

Rodgers has certainly evolved into one of the top quarterbacks in the league and has earned his contract while Kolb still has a lot to prove on the field.

At the time, the Rodgers contract may have been viewed as extreme or excessive, but the Packers had Rodgers in their system and knew exactly what they are paying for.

The Cardinals have eyed Kevin Kolb from afar, but are taking a bit of a risk as they are acquiring him based on potential and a small sample size.

Arizona did not have the benefit of watching Kolb in practice every day like the Packers did with Rodgers.

Green Bay certainly struck gold with their quarterback on the future and Cardinals fans can only hope for a similar fate with Kolb.
