Arizona Cardinals defensive back Tyrann Mathieu suffered a torn ACL in the team’s 40-17 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Dec. 20, and a few weeks later he went under the knife to repair his knee.
His offseason has, for the most part, gone according to plan, with the 24-year-old constantly talking about how he felt like he was ahead of schedule.
The team has maintained it plans on being cautious with the 2015 Pro Bowler, which makes sense given how important he is to their Super Bowl aspirations.
But now, as the reporting date for training camp is less than two weeks away, Mathieu has given another update on his progression.
Generally, someone with an ACL injury would have little trouble moving in a straight line, but instead would have issues moving laterally and cutting. As the video shows, Mathieu seems to be doing fine in that regard.
Last season, Mathieu was named a first-team All-Pro after recording 89 tackles, five interceptions, 16 passes defensed, 11 tackles for loss and a forced fumble. A third-round pick out of LSU in 2013, he established himself as a dynamic defensive talent as well as one of the leaders in the Cardinals’ locker room.
He is entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2016, however, and while both he and the Cardinals have expressed a desire to get an extension hammered out, so far they have been unable to come to terms.
