Sod arrives at Sun Devil Stadium

About a month and a half from the Arizona State Sun Devils’ first football game of the season, the first blades of grass are just going in.
“660 rolls of sod, 22 rolls per truck,” said Sun Devil Stadium head groundskeeper Brian Johnson.
That amounts to 88,000 square feet.
Sun Devil Stadium is more than halfway through a three-year, $256 million total renovation project, and the field is in need of fresh grass because construction equipment rumbling through the stadium has destroyed it.
“We do have to go with a thicker-cut sod because of the late date,” Johnson said. “But that’s nothing that hasn’t been done before.
“I think our team might want to get on field August 20th for a scrimmage or around there, and I’m very confident that we’ll be ready by that time.”
ASU’s first game is at Sun Devil Stadium against the NAU Lumberjacks on Sept 3.
All renovations are expected to be complete by 2017.
