Darnell Dockett’s biggest game came on the NFL’s brightest stage.
Feb. 1, 2009: Super Bowl XLIII
That night in Tampa Bay, Dockett sacked Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger three times, and harassed the passer for much of the night. In fact, Dockett was close to bringing Big Ben down a few other times — including on Pittsburgh’s game-winning drive. Just one more sack for No. 90 and, well, it’s possible the Cardinals would have been Super Bowl champions.
Oh well.
At any rate, as Dockett is set to sign a one-day contract with the Cardinals Monday and then retire, this seemed like as good a time as any to take a look at his career, by the numbers.
3
Dockett was named to three Pro Bowls, earning the nod in 2007, 2009 and 2010.
4
A defensive lineman, Dockett still managed to intercept four passes. In fact, he tallied one interception in each of his first three seasons in the NFL.
4 (part deux)
Buoyed by his three-sack effort in Super Bowl XLIII, Dockett amassed four sacks in six career playoff games.
7
With 40.5 sacks as a Cardinal, Dockett ranks seventh on the all-time franchise list.
9
The defensive lineman forced nine fumbles in his career.
11
A third-round pick out of Florida State in 2004, Dockett spent every one of his NFL seasons with the Cardinals.
12
A total of 12 defensive linemen (six defensive ends, six defensive tackles) were taken ahead of Dockett, who went 64th overall, in the 2004 draft. Of those 12, just one player — Will Smith, who was chosen No. 18 overall — notched more career sacks than Dockett.
14
Dockett recovered 14 fumbles in his career, including three in each of the 2008 and 2010 seasons.
156
Dockett started 156 of the 158 games he played in. Though his Cardinals career ended with him recovering from a torn ACL, he was a fixture on the field having played in all 16 games in eight out of 10 seasons.
