Making room on the 40-man roster in order to select Braden Shipley for a Monday start against the Brewers, the Arizona Diamondbacks moved starting pitcher Rubby De La Rosa to the 60-day disabled list.
Transferring De La Rosa from the 15-day DL confirms that the right-hander is still recovering from elbow inflammation after he went 4-5 with a 4.15 ERA in 11 starts to begin the 2016 season — the ERA is second-best among Arizona’s starters to Zack Greinke’s 3.62.
De La Rosa hit the 15-day disabled list on May 27.
Upon calling up Shipley, the D-backs also sent reliever Silvino Bracho to Triple-A Reno. Bracho has a 6.75 ERA in 14.2 innings out of the Arizona bullpen.
Shipley makes his major league debut after compiling an 8-5 record and 3.70 ERA with Triple-A Reno this season.
The 58th-best prospect on MLBPipeline.com’s top-100 list, Shipley has matured playing in a difficult setting in Reno to become a groundball pitcher, writes MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo.
His ability to continue to get groundball outs will be a key to his success in the big leagues, especially because he’s been missing fewer bats in each of the last two years. After striking out 9.1 per nine innings in 2014, his strikeout rate dropped to 6.8 in 2015 and 5.8 so far this season. He has a career 1.35 GO/AO, a sign he does have the ability to induce weak contact.
