D-backs’ Yasmany Tomas’ hot bat: By the numbers

The Arizona Diamondbacks haven’t found much to celebrate recently. Expectations haven’t been met, the losses have piled up.
But Yasmany Tomas, quietly, has been a bright spot as he ever so slowly has begun to figure it out.
On Friday night, it was Tomas who set the D-backs up for an 11-inning, 3-2 win that ended with a bases-loaded walk-off walk to catcher Welington Castillo. Tomas hit two solo home runs as the only source of offense for Arizona against the Milwaukee Brewers at Chase Field.

Tomas’ entire season has been promising after the Cuban’s disappointing rookie year in 2015. The 25-year-old struggled with culture change, a position change and an underwhelming performance at the plate. This season though, it looks like Tomas is starting to click on all cylinders.
Here is where Tomas stands by the numbers.

Behind only Jake Lamb, Tomas is second on the D-backs with a slugging percentage of .508 after the Friday victory. He is third of the healthy players — not including injured backup catcher Chris Herrmann — in on-base plus slugging (.821).

Tomas has hit a home run in three straight games after never having back-to-back games with bombs in his career.

The hot bat of Tomas has hit his long-balls against three types of pitches in the last three games. On Friday, he drilled a 80.5 mph changeup off Milwaukee’s Chase Anderson on a full count with the seventh pitch of his at-bat in the second inning, then beat Anderson again in the fourth with a blast off an 88.7 mph fastball. Previously, he smacked a first-pitch 76 mph curve off the Nationals’ Max Scherzer on Wednesday. A day before that, Tomas hit an 85.4 mph changeup thrown by the Nationals’ Tanner Roark.

The outfielder now leads the majors with six games of multi-home run games. He took the lead over former D-backs and current Orioles player Mark Trumbo on Friday. Tomas’ multi-homer outing on Friday was his fist at Chase Field. Tomas is two more of those games from tying Luis Gonzalez, who owns a franchise-record eight multi-bomb games in one season (2001).

Already, Tomas has hit 12 more home runs than the nine he produced in his rookie season.

Tomas has hit safely in 14 of the past 16 games.

The percent increase of extra-base hits from Tomas’ rookie campaign to his 2016 season thus far. Just 28 percent of his hits in 2015 were not singles compared to 44 percent this year. Tomas’ home run percentage has jumped from 2.1 percent to 5.1 percent, a difference of 45.1 at-bats per dinger last season to 18.4 in 2016.
