Stan Johnson named ASU men’s basketball assistant coach

With associate head coach Dedrique Taylor moving on to become the head coach at Cal State Fullerton, Arizona State head coach Herb Sendek didn’t take long to fill the spot.

Friday, Sendek hired former Drake assistant coach Stan Johnson to be part of his staff in Tempe.

Johnson spent two years on Drake’s staff under head coach Mark Phelps (another former Sendek assistant at ASU and North Carolina State). Phelps was fired last month after five years on the job.

Before his time at Drake, Johnson served on coaching staffs at Bemidji State, Southwest Baptist University, Cal State Northridge and the University of Utah.

“Coach Johnson is impressive in every way and allows us to continue to have a fantastic coaching staff. I was enriched to work with Coach Taylor and I am excited to work with Coach Johnson,” Sendek said in a press release Friday.
