College football Week 1 includes Nebraska’s touching tribute, Kiffin’s fire tweet

The 2016 opening weekend of college football is almost in the books.

No. 11 Ole Miss and No. 4 Florida State, who cap Week 1 on Monday night, will have to forgive us. We’re already inundated with wild, wacky and emotional highlights this weekend.

Missed a game or two? No worries.

From Nebraska’s touching tribute to punter Sam Foltz, to the Michigan band’s Jumpman formation, to the wild Texas-Notre Dame game, these are the best images from Week 1 that will tell the story that the box score just couldn’t.

NEBRASKA HONORS FOLTZ

Prior to the game, Nebraska honored punter Sam Foltz, who was tragically killed in a car accident in July.

But during the opener against Fresno State, the Cornhuskers lined up for their first punt with an empty formation, leading to a delay-of-game penalty.

That became the most emotional few moments of the weekend.

CUTE PICTURE OF LITTLE BOY ACCOMPANIED BY FIRE CAPTION

Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin is polarizing, to say the least. We’re not even sure if boss-man Nick Saban likes the guy, but we certainly know how Lane feels about losing his old USC head coaching gig on a tarmac following a loss to Arizona State.

Take a look at this tweet and see if you get the message.

Yes, that’s Kiffin’s kid with the game ball that went to his dad for helping the Tide roll his old team 52-6. But it’s also accompanied by a caption: “Post game w the game ball!!! #3:14AM-LAX.”

Might that be something about being fired really early in the morning at Los Angeles International Airport?

Probably.

Lane Kiffin is simply vicious.

THAT BAND UP TO SOMETHING

Michigan’s band didn’t seem to care this was a football stadium and they was playing during halftime of a football game.

The Wolverines were, however, quick to remind they’re now a Jordan Brand school.

Michael Jordan was at the game in person, and the band honored His Airness’ presence with a formation of the Jumpman Jordan logo.

It’s surprising Drake was also not at this game.

WHAT’S A W.I.N.?

Kansas football is very, very bad. It went 0-12 last year and hasn’t won more than three games in a single season since winning five in 2009.

The Jayhawk football fans, who apparently can’t translate how to function based on their basketball success, rushed the field Saturday when they beat Rhode Island 55-6.

Apparently, the P.A. announcer was embarrassed.

Let’s give these Kansas fans the benefit of the doubt. They looked more confused than thrilled about how to handle such things.

NOTRE DAME-TEXAS HAD FEELINGS

So, No. 10 Notre Dame was down two points in regulation with Texas kicking an extra point. Then this happened.

But the Longhorns pulled out the 50-47 victory in double-overtime on Tyrone Swoopes’ touchdown run, leading to the Texas quarterback getting behind the Darrell K. Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium cannon.

Anyway, the roller coaster of emotions went like so for Irish fans.

AVOIDING TERRIBLE RESULTS CAUSES BUTCH JONES TO DO NICE THINGS

Tennessee really should have lost to Appalachian State.

There’s no cheaper way to win than fumbling into your own end zone and falling on the ball. Volunteers head coach Butch Jones knows this, which is probably why he felt the need to tell Appalachian State players they are super great even though they lost.

“You should be proud for playing your hearts out and I am really glad to still have a job,” the opposing coach probably told them in a postgame speech.

IF A DUDE IS CELEBRATING, MAYBE DON’T HIT HIM

For an actual upset, we go to Wisconsin’s big win against No. 5 LSU.

The game was unofficially over when the Tigers’ quarterback threw a pretty terrible interception, a Badgers player started celebrating after going down and an LSU player decided to knock the crap out of him anyway.

Week 2, we already can’t wait for you.
