LISTEN: Vin Scully calls the 2nd inning of Diamondbacks-Dodgers

Diamondbacks fans listened to just one inning of Vin Scully’s play-by-play.

The Dodgers broadcaster packed it full of his usual best.

Los Angeles led Arizona 2-1 heading into the second inning on Tuesday when Arizona Sports 98.7 FM picked up the legendary broadcaster’s clever commentary and storytelling woven into the fabric of the play-by-play.

Scully first ties Yasmany Tomas’ at-bat to Arizona manager Chip Hale, who once coached another Cuban, Yoenis Cespedes, as a bench coach with the Athletics. He recalled the manager’s story about the Cubans’ game-day habits — arriving just an hour before first-pitch — and how that experience helped Hale understand the cultural acclimation ahead for Tomas in 2015, his first MLB season.

“He tried to take care of Tomas,” Scully said, before seamlessly describing Tomas’ game. “Of course, Tomas doesn’t need anybody to take care of him. He’s 6-1 and about 230.”

Scully had fun with outfielder Socrates Brito’s name –“Pretty tough to live under the name Socrates,” the broadcaster mused before telling a few tales of the ancient philosopher — and closed the first inning with this nod to the Diamondbacks.

“It’s a big deal for me. It’s an honor and a pleasure,” he said of the shared broadcast. “I didn’t tell you congratulations when you won the World Series in 2001 so I duck it in now.
