Rubby De La Rosa will return from the disabled list and take the mound to start the Arizona Diamondbacks’ game against the San Francisco Giants on Friday, the team announced.

Rehabbing from an elbow injury, it’s expected De La Rosa will be limited as the team builds his pitch count.

The right-hander effectively takes the place of Braden Shipley in the lineup, but the D-backs said the rest of pitchers scheduled to play in the series against San Francisco will be unchanged, perhaps hinting that Shipley could still pitch once De La Rosa hits his pitch-count limit.

De La Rosa is coming off a 30-pitch, two-inning performance with Single-A Visalia. In two games with Visalia, he has pitched a total of three innings with one hit allowed, six strikeouts and no walks. Before that, he played in two games in the rookie league.

For the Diamondbacks this season, De La Rosa is 4-5 with a 4.15 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 11 games played before his injury. He last played for Arizona on May 25.

Following De La Rosa’s start, Archie Bradley will pitch Saturday with Zack Greinke back on the mound Sunday.

Arizona must make a corresponding roster move Friday in concert with pulling De La Rosa off the disabled list.
