In another quarterback ranking, Carson Palmer graded a notch below average.

Ron Jaworski, in an ESPN Insider piece, listed Palmer as the 20th-best starting quarterback in the NFL.

Jaworski’s film assessment seems to fit Palmer’s perception around the league. Anonymous league insiders said Palmer is a third-tier NFL quarterback.

Palmer finished last season ranked in the top half of the NFL in completion percentage (63.3), touchdowns (24) and passing yards (4,274). On the flip side, he also threw the second most interceptions (22) in the league.

In the Cardinals’ final nine games, Palmer had a quarterback rating of 96.5 compared to 69.5 before.

Here is what Jaworski says about the Arizona Cardinals’ signal-caller:

Palmer remains a tremendous anticipation thrower and has a really good feel for the passing game. He will throw it into man coverage and give his guys a chance. But even though he knows where to go with the football, he still made too many mistakes for a veteran quarterback; there were some games where I didn’t know where he was throwing the football. He needs to improve his decision-making, as his nine third-down interceptions were the most in the NFC. I think he will improve in his second year working with Bruce Arians.
