Arizona Cardinals GM Steve Keim likes what he’s seen from rookie John Brown

LISTEN: Steve Keim, Arizona Cardinals GM

Speed kills.

If that old adage holds true, Arizona Cardinals rookie receiver John Brown is going to inflict a lot of punishment on opposing defensive backs in 2014.

Brown, a third-round pick out of Pittsburg State, was the third-fastest receiver at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, and according to Cardinals general manager Steve Keim, a guest of Doug on Wolf Monday on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM, that speed is translating to the next level early in training camp.

“John Brown,” Keim answered when asked whom fans should focus on during the team’s first padded practice Monday. “I’ve said it on your show earlier in the offseason, he has been borderline dominating at times, to the point where you really have to temper your enthusiasm because I had said the pads had not come on yet.

“So now, how does John Brown respond when he’s got two 6-foot-plus corners in his face pressing him and rerouting him at the line of scrimmage. How’s he going to hold up as a smaller receiver going over the middle and Deone Bucannon comes across and wants to take his head off?”

Brown, who caught 61 passes for 1,198 yards and 14 touchdowns as a senior in college last season, figures to battle veteran Ted Ginn, Jr. for the the third receiver spot behind Larry Fitzgerald and Michael Floyd during camp.

It’s early, but Keim likes what he has seen so far from the rookie.

“I can tell you, so far, we haven’t been able to cover him.”
