Similarities exist, but don’t compare Kolb to Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers was handed the keys to the Green Bay Packers
offense after four seasons of backing up future Hall of
Fame QB Brett Favre.

Rodgers, in his first year as a starter, threw for 4,038
yards and 28 touchdowns, numbers that likely surprised
even the most optimistic Packers fans.

Kevin Kolb is in a similar spot with the Cardinals, as he
will take over an offense after four seasons as an NFL
backup. Can we expect similar results?

“Kevin will come in with more experience than Aaron,”
Daryn Colledge told Sports 620 KTAR’s Dave Burns and John
Gambadoro.

Of course, Colledge would know since used to block for
Rodgers in Green Bay and, after signing with the Cardinals
this off-season, will do the same for Kolb. He says Kolb
has an experience advantage that Rodgers didn’t have that
first season.

“Similarities in their game are both are extremely
talented, both have a rocket for an arm,” he said.

But, Colledge said the comparisons should end there.

“But I know Kevin wants to be his own guy, he doesn’t want
to be compared to Aaron,” he said. “He wants his chance at
a Super Bowl, he wants to be his own MVP, and he’s going
to try to do that right here in Arizona.

“That’s exactly what we expect out of him, we expect him
to be one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL and that’s
why he’s here.”

In all fairness, there probably aren’t many who are
expecting a Rodgers-like performance this season. The
Packers QB had the benefit of being in the same offensive
system for years as well as a full off-season as the
team’s starting quarterback, while Kolb has had neither.

That said, Rodgers offers a likely “best case” scenario
for what Kolb could become, and if the Cardinals’ QB comes
anywhere near the Super Bowl champion’s level chances are
people will be pretty happy.
