The Arizona Cardinals have made a roster move just hours ahead of their Thursday night game against the San Francisco 49ers in Santa Clara, elevating tight end Hakeem Valles from the practice squad.
To make room for Valles’ promotion, running back Kerwynn Williams was waived. Williams was re-signed earlier this week to replace Chris Johnson, who was placed on injured reserve earlier this week with a groin injury that will require surgery.
The 6-foot-5, 260-pound Valles was with the Cardinals during training camp and was signed back to the practice squad after the final roster cutdown. He caught one pass for 24 yards in a 38-17 preseason win over the Denver Broncos Sept. 1.
The Cardinals now have only three running backs — David Johnson, Andre Ellington and Stepfan Taylor — on their 53-man roster heading into Thursday’s game.
