The first half of the season hasn’t gone the way the Arizona Cardinals wanted it or expected it to go.
Don’t blame David Johnson.
The second-year running back has become the focal point of the Cardinals’ offense, and he’s delivered.
Thursday, Johnson was named the NFC’s Offensive Player of the Month for October. Johnson led the league with 726 yards from scrimmage (488 rushing, 238 receiving) in Arizona’s five games.
The 24-year-old had three straight 100-yard rushing games against San Francisco, the New York Jets and the Seattle Seahawks. The Cardinals posted a 2-0-1 record in those three weeks.
Johnson’s October production wasn’t really an anomaly. He leads the NFL with 1,112 yards from scrimmage and is tied for third in the league with eight total touchdowns.
He becomes the first Cardinals player to win the monthly offensive award since Boomer Esiason did it in November of 1996. In all, eight Cardinals players have won a Player of the Month award since they relocated from St. Louis in 1988, with safety Tyrann Mathieu being the last. He won the defensive honor last November.
