Receivers are important to Kevin Kolb’s development

The focus for most of the Cardinals offseason and training camp has been on the quarterback position and just how much Kevin Kolb can improve it. With that said, it may be the wide receivers who play the most important part in ensuring the signal caller’s success or failure.

Larry Fitzgerald agrees and thinks it’s his and the rest of the receivers job to make sure their new quarterback is comfortable in the offense.

“We have to go out there and we have to instill the confidence in Kevin that we’re going to be where we need to be for him,” Fitzgerald told reporters. “We need to make his job easier. It’s not all about him coming in here and making the throws. We need to make plays for him.”

The process seems to be going well so far. The Pro Bowl wide out thinks he and Kolb have begun to build a rapport on the field.

“Every day I’m out here with him we get more comfortable with each other,” Fitzgerald said. “He’s really getting comfortable in the offense now this being his fifth or sixth practice. He’s got a lot of poise. He knows where to go with the football.”

Fans will get a chance to see just how comfortable Kolb truly is in the offense Thursday when the Cardinals travel to Oakland for their first of four preseason games.

While the play on the field is likely to be uglier than usual thanks to the league’s lockout, it should give the fans and the coaching staff a feel for just what they can expect from Kolb this year. Hopefully Fitzgerald and the rest of the receivers make their new quarterback look a lot better than their old ones.
