The Washington Redskins came to Glendale Sunday in possession of the sixth and final NFC playoff spot.

They left town on the outside looking in after their 31-23 loss to the Arizona Cardinals and Tampa Bay’s road win at San Diego. And let’s just say, they’re not all that happy about their performance.

All week long leading up to the game, we kept you up to date with the Redskins’ preparation for the Cardinals in Behind Enemy Lines.

Monday morning, we take a look at what they’re saying in D.C. after the game.

It’s Opponent Aftermath.

Jay Gruden lights into the Redskins, who seem to need it (Washington Post)

Jay Gruden, who is usually a master at downplaying the craziness that smolders within the Washington Redskins, roared late Sunday afternoon. Standing outside the locker room, you could hear the coach berating his team after a 31-23 loss to Arizona, his words thundering through cinder block walls, almost strong enough for snooping ears to translate into sentences.

Redskins defense takes the blame for putting team’s playoff hopes in jeopardy (Washington Post)

Washington’s defensive players left University of Phoenix Stadium aware that the way to regain that playoff spot is by their unit curing the ills that led to the Redskins’ first back-to-back losses since Weeks 1 and 2.

Kirk Cousins insists defense not at fault for latest loss; Chris Baker says otherwise (Washington Post)

“Our offense is doing an incredible job each and every week,” Baker said, “but we just keep letting them down on defense, and it’s really frustrating.”

In Baker’s view, Sunday’s loss at Arizona was a repeat of the Redskins’ Thanksgiving Day loss at Dallas, in which the defense couldn’t get the opposing offense off the field on third down. After the Redskins’ defense surrendered a touchdown to open the game, the offense played from behind all afternoon.

Redskins lose grip on playoff spot with loss in Arizona (Washington Times)

Sunday’s 31-23 loss to the Arizona Cardinals cost the 6-5-1 Redskins their hold on the second wild card spot in the NFC playoff standings, as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers moved ahead of Washington with a win over the San Diego Chargers.

Redskins struggle to contain David Johnson in loss to Cardinals (Washington Times)

Johnson finished the game with 84 yards rushing and added another 91 receiving. The matchup nightmare — who stands at 6-foot-1 and weighs 225 pounds — was simply too much for the Redskins to handle.

Kirk Cousins’ season will be defined over final month (ESPN.com)

The goodwill built up over the last month doesn’t end because of one loss or a game-ending interception by Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins. He played well in this time, has earned praise and clearly built up a strong case for a big-money contract.

Redskins’ Jay Gruden blasts team after ‘frustrating’ loss to Cardinals (ESPN.com)

“This is the hottest I’ve ever seen him,” Redskins defensive end Chris Baker said. “He has every right to be as mad as he is because we’re too good for this. If we want to get to that next step and have another chance to get to the playoffs, we have to handle our business.”

Redskins’ defense falters again in loss to Cardinals (ESPN.com)

The Washington Redskins’ primary offseason issue shouldn’t be how much they will spend on quarterback Kirk Cousins. It should be how much they will invest in their defense. If they don’t make the playoffs — and they have made that task more difficult for themselves — it will be that side of the ball that kept them out.

Josh Norman on his crucial fourth-quarter penalty vs. Larry Fitzgerald (CSN Mid-Atlantic)

On the field, Norman seemed to be none too pleased with the penalty flag. He said after the game that he thinks that Fitzgerald may have stolen a flag.

“He [Fitzgerald] was within five yards. Larry is a wily vet,” said Norman. “I’d been doing it all game, kind of . . . He breaks out and I go for the ball and the flag got thrown. We’d like to see that not happen in that situation because there was some good position, some good leverage. And a flag came out.
